In 2006 the Moroccan government introduced a system or “indexation” which means that fuel prices can change quickly, however, they are also set by the government and this keeps the prices fairly stable depending on how the world fuel prices vary. Prices are lower in the "Sahara provinces" (the Western Sahara) where fuel is sold tax-free. Fuel prices can vary as much as 50 per cent in the south and in the Saharah Provinces where fuel is sold tax-free. You can also find cheaper fuel in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast If you run on unleaded fuel then make sure you fill your tanks in the larger cities where it is easily available. Many petrol stations outside the cities only have leaded fuel although that seems to be changing quickly and it is becoming more available all over Morocco.
