Tips for driving by car
Morocco roads are fairly well maintained and it isn´t too frightening to drive around even in the busy cities like Marrekech and Casablanca. The roads are fairly well maintained and even though the motorways aren´t like at home they serve the purpose.

In the cities the traffic system runs very similar to back home, except the British will obviously have the strange expereince of driving on the left rather than the right. Even the roads on the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert are well maintained.

You need a full driving license to drive in Morocco. Make sure you take out full insurance cover to keep you safe. If there is no private off road parking where you are staying and you have to park the car outside it is best to ask someone you know who lives locally, the hotel reception desk, tourist information, etc, if it is safe to park and where best to park as well.

Although it the roads and traffic lights all seem similar the drivers in Morocco are not and the laws are not quite so tight as in the UK for instance. Some cars and vehicles in Morocco look set for the scrap heap and some of the drivers for sure need to take a few extra lessons. One difference to watch out for is it is legal to drive without lights at night if you are driving below 20km per hour.

Petrol is appoximately 0,95 Euros per litre. Prices are lower in the "Sahara provinces" (the Western Sahara) where fuel is sold tax-free. Fuel prices can vary as much as 50 per cent in the south and in the Saharah Provinces where fuel is sold tax-free. You can also find cheaper fuel in the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast

If you run on unleaded fuel then make sure you fill your tanks in the larger cities where it is easily available. Many petrol stations outside the cities only have leaded fuel although that seems to be changing quickly and it is becoming more available all over Morocco.

Don´t leave anything on show in the car if you are going to park it and leave it for any duration of time. Keep all bags etc with you or if you can´t carry them around make sure they are hidden.
