Erfoud is an excellent place to base yourself if you are exploring the Ziz Valley and dunes of Merzouga. It used to be a stopping point to hire guides, horses and camels before entering the desert but the world seems to have forgotten Erfoud.
Erfoud is much like a French-built administrative town from the thirties with its dusty red buildings and nowadays has a ghost town atmosphere. It was turned into a military town by the French in an attempt to keep the rebelling Berbers under control. It is probably on known for its marble and the date festival and as a good base for people exploring the Ziz valley, and the extraordinary dunes out at Merzouga. The road from Er-Rachidia has some of the most spectacular scenery, with ancient Berber fortress set in palm groves as far as the eye can see and if you are lucky enough you may experience a sandstorm which is a totally surreal experience.
