Haggling in Shops

Everybody is telling us that morocco is the country where you haggle for everything. However, you have to know when and where you have to do it , because is not always as simple as that.

There are shops like in all countries that they have already established their prices , and if you try to haggle like everybody tells us it sometimes just doesnt work. For example, it is easy haggle in shops where every single owner is working independently and is not part of any society that has established prices. However, the truth of the matter is this is all changing and with a quite a velocity, especailly in the tourist areas.

The last day I was shopping in the city and I discovered two things, I could haggle, but at the same time and in another way I received weird faces ( ehhhh???? Bad looks in the country of haggling? Yeahhhh!!!!) Later on I tried again to haggle in different shops and was chastised for hard haggling and asked if I was Spanish and told that the Spanish always haggle hard. However, my husband isnt Spanish and he gets much the same treatment. I think it is tactics more than anything and you have to follow some rules to barter well. The main thing is keep it friendly and smile. At the end of the day if you follow some guidelines to haggling it can be really enjoyed and everybody will laugh and smile at the end of the day it is really fun.

Go into the shop and ask for the price of something which you are not really interested in. The owner or assistant there is going to give you the first price and probably a high one. The trick is in this moment to not look really interested and make out as if you are going to leave the shop, but before you leave the shop ask for the price of something that you really were interested in from the beginning. The salesperson will then give you another, better price rather than lose a sale which he almost lost to begin with.

When ask how much and accept the price and pay for sure you going to thing that probably you could have got a better price, but now it is too late and you cant get back in the deal. You have to pay and leave, dont worry we always leave the shop thinking that we could have got a better deal. This has happened with all of us at the beginning, with me too. Next time when the salesperson, or owner is asking you how much do you want to pay? You should try to ask instead, “what is your best price, or offer”? In this way you can enter into a haggle and bring the price down a bit more. Remember, always have fun.

Dont be in a hurry to buy. Before you choose you should to check the prices in all the shops around and then later it is more easy to chose and buy the best offer. You will feel better with your shopping. When you choose to start to haggle take it slowly and make it enjoyable makes some jokes and try all the Arabic works you have learned in your trip to help you out he,he,he J .

Dont be embarrassed to haggle , the prices are normally a little bit high because they know tourists are likely to buy. You can haggle and lower the price a bit and if you do it with a nice attitude finally it can be good and enjoyable for all of us. Even after a super invitation to have some tea and sitting for two hours to see every carpet in the shop dont feel you have to buy something, or it would be rude to barter. Haggle, so no to everything, stick with your guns and buy only if you want to buy. If you have a pleasant smile and are polite you can ask for the carpets for free and then see the looks and smiles on their faces for a change as well. Have fun and haggling is free for everybody.
